James McMurtry was born in Fort Worth (Texas) in 1962 and is a singer, songwriter, guitarist (electric guitar, baritone guitar, resonator guitar, and 6 string and 12 string acoustic guitar), and bandleader. He began his musical journey by learning to play the guitar (given to him by his father) when he was 7 years old. He said in an interview, "My mother taught me three chords and the rest I just stole as I went along. I learned everything by ear or by watching people." Over the years, his musical style has spanned many genres such as roots rock (a subgenre of rock music that takes inspiration from various American musical traditions such as country, blues, and folk), folk rock, alternative country (a subgenre of country music that incorporates influences ranging from roots rock, bluegrass, rockabilly, honky-tonk, alternative rock, folk rock, and punk rock), and Americana (contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, blues, roots rock, R&B, folk, and bluegrass, resulting in a distinctive roots oriented sound).
