MHD, France’s sensational Afrotrap artist is bringing his signature sounds to the Brighton Music Hall!
MHD (birth name Mohamed Sylla) was born in La Roche-sur-Yon (France) in 1994 and is a rapper. He was influenced by French group Sexion d’Assaut, grime (a genre that emerged in East London in the early 2000s, out of earlier UK electronic music styles, including UK garage and jungle, and also draws influence from Jamaican dancehall, ragga, and hip hop), and, unlike most French rappers, he didn’t use American hip hop as a template to work off but drew from his French and African heritage. His musical style that’s best described as a blend of French hip hop and Afrotrap; the latter being a blend of Afrobeat (a genre - created by Nigerian multi instrumentalist and bandleader Fela Kuti, partially as an attempt to distinguish his music from the "soul music" of American artists such as James Brown - based on a combination of West African musical styles, such as highlife and yoruba, with American funk and jazz, with a focus on chanted vocals and percussion) and trap (a subgenre of Southern hip hop that originated in the 1990s and is characterized by ominous lyrics, heavy kick drums from a Roland TR 808 synthesizer, double time division hi hats, and layered synthesizers). He’s had a stellar career with 1 studio album and 16 singles.
