The band was formed in (Halifax, Nova Scotia) in 1991 and consists of Chris Murphy (bass, drums, guitar, piano, vocals), Andrew Scott (drums, guitar), Patrick Pentland (guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, vocals), and Jay Ferguson (guitar, bass, drums). Chris and Andrew first met at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) and formed the band. They recruited Patrick and Jay shortly thereafter and named the band after the nickname of one of their friends. They’ve made a name for themselves for having an unchanged line-up for 25 years and they’ve released 10 studio albums, 2 live albums, 6 compilation albums, 17 music videos, 2 extended plays, and 31 singles. 4 of their albums have been certified Gold (50,000 units sold) by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) and their 2014 album (Commonwealth) hit #9 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart. They’ve received many accolades including a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album (for their 1996 album One Chord to Another) and 5 East Coast Music Awards (for Rock Recording of the Year and 2 each for Alternative Recording of the Year and Video of the Year). They’ve also been nominated for 9 other Juno Awards and 6 other East Coast Music Awards.
