The Underachievers, New York's sensational hip hop artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Brighton Music Hall!
The Underachievers was formed in Flatbush (Brooklyn) in 2011 and is a duo consisting of childhood friends AK the Savior (birth name Akeem Joseph) and Issa Gold (birth name Marlon Fung). Their musical style is best described as a blend of East Coast hip hop (a style that originated in the New York City area during the 1970s - prioritizing complex lyrics for attentive listening rather than beats for dancing - and only became a distinct subgenre after artists from other regions of the United States emerged with different styles), psychedelic hip hop (a subgenre of experimental hip hop characterized by complex sample based beats, often obscure material, and witty, abstract lyrics filled with unconventional references), and underground rap (a label used to refer to rappers who are brazenly anti commercial and/or proudly independent, indifferent to the exposure promised by major label promotion and distribution). Issa cites Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, and John Mayer as his main influences and the duo also take inspiration from many other genres. They've had a stellar career with 3 studio albums (2 of which were top 20 hits on both of Billboard's Top Rap Albums and Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums charts) , 1 extended play, and 3 mix tapes.
